Custom Cabinets in Durango
Custom cabinetry comes down to one decision made once: how the box is built, what the faces are made of, what finishes you can put on them. Ours is thermally fused melamine on plywood boxes, built in Durango. That holds whether we're doing your kitchen, your bathroom, your laundry, your office, or your pantry. Same construction, same shop, same lead time.

One cabinetmaker, every room in your house
The reason to use one shop across several rooms is that everything lines up. The kitchen and the mudroom match. The bathroom vanity and the laundry counter carry the same finish, the same hardware, the same edges. You deal with one designer, one install schedule, one crew that owns the result from measure to touch-up. Nobody’s pointing at another contractor when something doesn’t meet.
It’s also how a finish stays consistent over time. If you do the kitchen this year and the laundry next year, we’re pulling from the same catalog and the same shop, so the second room reads as part of the first instead of a close-enough match.
Our construction method is identical across all of the cabinets we make. What changes room to room is the configuration and the accessories.

Melamine beats hardwood for value and longevity
Melamine vs Hardwood
Solid wood looks great, but it doesn't like our weather. Colorado air is dry most of the year and then swings with the seasons. Wood soaks up moisture and lets it go, so wood doors crack, cup, and pull apart at the seams after a few winters. That's just what wood does when the air keeps changing.
Melamine stays put. The surface is fused onto a core that's built to hold its shape, so a door that fits in January still fits in July. It's hard, it wipes clean, and the color matches all the way across your kitchen. And you can save thousands of dollars and you get a cabinet that looks the same in year fifteen as it did on day one.

Check out our materials and finish options
Every cabinet we build uses thermally fused melamine. If that’s a new term, here’s the short version: the finish is bonded onto the core board under heat and pressure, so it’s part of the panel instead of a sheet glued on top. That’s why it holds up the way it does. No peeling edges, no finish to crack, and a surface that wipes clean and stays the same color for years.
Colors and finishes
More than 50 to pick from: bright whites, warm off-whites, wood-look grains, deep blues and greens, greys, and matte blacks. Your designer brings the real samples to your house so you can hold them next to your counters and floors, in your own light, before you decide.
Door and drawer fronts
Slab, finger-pull, or grooved. Slab is clean and modern, finger-pull skips the handles, and grooved adds a little texture. Match your trim or go the other way on purpose.
Hardware
Matte black, brushed nickel, polished chrome, antique brass, and more. Soft-close hinges and drawer slides come on every cabinet, standard, never an extra charge.
Edges and matching
Every edge is banded to match the face, so there’s no raw seam to catch or lift. And because it all comes off one line in one shop, the finish stays consistent from the kitchen to the bath to the laundry.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are you a franchise?
No. Colorado Closets Plus is locally owned and has designed, built, and installed in Durango since 2008. The designer who walks your home is part of the same team that manufactures and installs the project.
Do you offer a free consultation?
Yes. Every project starts with a free in-home consultation — we come to you, measure the space, talk through how you use it, and leave you with a design and an itemized quote. No obligation, and no showroom visit required.
Do you handle electrical for home bar fridges?
We have a short list of preferred contractors that we work closely with in every city in the four corners. No matter what brand or style you’re looking for we have the right partner for the job.
Where is everything manufactured?
At our own facility at 190 Turner Drive in Durango. Nothing ships in from a national distribution center — which means shorter lead times and changes resolved in days, not weeks.
What are your closets and cabinets made of?
High-quality thermally fused melamine — hard, non-porous, easy to clean, and stable in dry Colorado air, where cheaper boards swell or peel. Cabinet boxes are built on plywood. The finish holds up for decades.
What rooms do you build cabinets for?
Kitchen, bathroom, laundry, office, and pantry — plus built-ins like entertainment centers and mudroom lockers. Same construction quality in every room.
Why plywood boxes instead of particleboard?
Plywood holds screws better, resists swelling at the joints when moisture is present, and lasts longer under daily use. It costs more to build — and in dry mountain air, the difference compounds over the years.
How do your cabinets compare to big-box stock cabinets?
Fit, material, and lifespan. Stock comes in fixed widths with particleboard boxes; ours are built to your exact measurements with plywood boxes and soft-close hardware as standard.
Can you match finishes across rooms?
Yes — running one finish across the kitchen, laundry, and bath keeps a whole-house project cohesive. One team, one install schedule.
Do you work outside Durango?
We do. Our crew works with clients in Telluride, Mountain Village, Pagosa Springs, Cortez, and all around the Four Corners. The free consultation and the install both come to you.
What does the first step look like?
A designer comes to the house, measures, and talks through what is not working. You see the design before anything is built.
Do you serve Telluride, Pagosa Springs, and Ouray?
Yes. We travel throughout Southwest Colorado for consultations and installations — Telluride, Pagosa Springs, Ouray, Cortez, Silverton, Bayfield, Farmington, and the surrounding communities.
Do you do countertops?
We build and install the cabinetry and coordinate your countertops with local suppliers — Durango has a number of excellent fabricators to choose from. We sequence the installs so the cabinetry and counters go in the right order and you’re not left juggling two contractors. Your designer will help coordinate the details at the consultation.
Do you work in new construction as well as existing homes?
Both. Most of our work is retrofit in existing homes, but we also coordinate with builders and architects on new builds — the earlier we’re involved, the more storage gets designed into the house itself.
Can you do more than one room in a single project?
Yes. Whole-house projects are common, and carrying one finish across rooms keeps everything cohesive — one design team, one install schedule, one point of contact.
What finishes are available?
Every material we offer has more than 50 variations. Wood grains, whites, warmer off-whites, colors, and all the hardware you could imagine. If you want to see the whole menu come on down to our showroom on Turner Drive in Durango or book a free design consultation and we’ll come to you.
How long does installation take?
Most single-room projects install in one to two days. Larger or multi-room projects are phased so you’re not living in a construction zone. You’ll get a specific timeline once the design is finalized.
Can I do one product now and add more later?
Yes. Many clients start with one closet or room and come back for others. We keep your finish and design on file so later additions match.
How many color and finish options are there?
More than 50 — crisp whites, warm off-whites, wood tones, deep blues and greens, charcoals, and matte blacks. We bring physical samples to your home so you can see them in the room’s actual light.
Do you have a showroom?
We have a small showroom at our production facility in Durango at 190 Turner Drive Units B & H,
Durango. We come to you for your design consultation, but if you’re interested in seeing where the magic happens, or if you just want to get an in-person look at some of our beautiful finish and accessories here in-store, we’d love to show you around.
