Custom Luxury Walk-In Closets
Most walk-in closets are bigger than they need to be and less organized than they should be. The square footage is there, but the layout feels builder-grade. The real design work in a walk-in is the layout call, U-shape, L-shape, galley, single-wall, not the measurements. We design custom luxury walk-ins around the layout first and let the measurements follow.

Attainable luxury for real-life Colorado homes
Two walk-ins of the same square footage can hold wildly different amounts, and the difference is almost never the size. It’s the shape you build into it and the finish + accessories that make or break the closet.
A U-shape wraps three walls and gives you the most capacity, but it needs the floor to give it back. An L-shape is what you reach for when a window or a door claims one wall. A galley runs two facing walls with a path down the middle, which is how a narrow room earns its keep. A single-wall is the leanest version, and in a converted bedroom or a wide alcove it’s often the only honest option.
None of that gets decided off a tape measure. We walk the room with you, figure out which shape the space actually wants, and design the hanging, drawers, and shelving into it from there. Built in Durango, installed by our crew, sized to your wardrobe rather than a standard split.
Design Options & Configurations
A walk-in has more variables than most storage products. Here's how the main decisions break down.

Layout
U-shape (three walls, 6×8 minimum), L-shape (two walls, irregular footprints), galley (two parallel walls, narrow spaces), or single-wall (the minimum walk-in). The layout sets what's possible inside.

Rods & Hangers
Double hang for shirts and jackets (under 40"), long hang for dresses and coats (full drop), or zoned by section. We size each section to your wardrobe, not to a standard split.
Colors & Finishes
50+ color and finish options: bright whites, warm woods, deep charcoals, matte blacks. Samples come to the consultation so you can see them in your closet's real light.
Accessories
Drawer banks, shoe shelving (flat, angled, or floor-to-ceiling towers), velvet-lined jewelry drawers, valet rods, belt and tie racks, pull-out hampers, mirror panels, and integrated lighting rough-out.

Custom Luxury Walk-In Closets in Durango
U-Shape Layouts
Storage on three walls, the most capacity for the footprint. Needs at least 6 by 8 feet of clear floor. The most popular layout for a primary bedroom walk-in.
L-shape Layouts
Storage on two adjacent walls. Works in a smaller or irregular room, where a window or door on one wall takes the third wall out of play.
Galley Layouts
Storage on two parallel walls with a walkway between, efficient in a narrow space, usually under 6 feet wide. You reach both sides.
Single-Wall Layouts
Everything on one wall, the smallest a walk-in gets. Good for a converted room, a big alcove, or a space where only one wall is free for storage.
Boutique Luxury
An island adds drawers, a folding surface, and a centerpiece. Needs at least 8 feet of clearance on one side. Pairs well with integrated lighting and a mirror panel.
Shared Walk-Ins
Couples sharing a closet need their own zones. Different wardrobes, different priorities. We design separate sections so nobody's negotiating over the same drawer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What walk-in layouts are available?
U-shape (three walls, about 6 by 8 minimum), L-shape (two walls, irregular footprints), galley (two parallel walls, narrow spaces), and single-wall (the minimum walk-in). Layout matters more than square footage.
Can you design a closet two people share?
Yes — dedicated zones for each person’s wardrobe, with separate hanging and drawer banks, so no one’s negotiating for space every morning.
Do you install lighting?
Yes. We design and install any lighting that doesn’t require patching into your home’s electrical — think battery and motion-sensor units, plug-in under-shelf LED strips, and entry lights. For hardwired, integrated lighting we design and rough it out, and the final electrical connection is handled by your electrician. Your designer will map out the right lighting plan for your space at the consultation.
What does the first step look like?
A designer comes to the house, measures, and talks through what is not working. You see the design before anything is built.
What are your closets and cabinets made of?
High-quality thermally fused melamine — hard, non-porous, easy to clean, and stable in dry Colorado air, where cheaper boards swell or peel. Cabinet boxes are built on plywood. The finish holds up for decades.
How long does installation take?
Most single-room projects install in one to two days. Larger or multi-room projects are phased so you’re not living in a construction zone. You’ll get a specific timeline once the design is finalized.
Are you a franchise?
No. Colorado Closets Plus is locally owned and has designed, built, and installed in Durango since 2008. The designer who walks your home is part of the same team that manufactures and installs the project.
What finishes are available?
Every material we offer has more than 50 variations. Wood grains, whites, warmer off-whites, colors, and all the hardware you could imagine. If you want to see the whole menu come on down to our showroom on Turner Drive in Durango or book a free design consultation and we’ll come to you.
Do you have a showroom?
We have a small showroom at our production facility in Durango at 190 Turner Drive Units B & H,
Durango. We come to you for your design consultation, but if you’re interested in seeing where the magic happens, or if you just want to get an in-person look at some of our beautiful finish and accessories here in-store, we’d love to show you around.Do you offer a free consultation?
Yes. Every project starts with a free in-home consultation — we come to you, measure the space, talk through how you use it, and leave you with a design and an itemized quote. No obligation, and no showroom visit required.
Do you work outside Durango?
We do. Our crew works with clients in Telluride, Mountain Village, Pagosa Springs, Cortez, and all around the Four Corners. The free consultation and the install both come to you.
What’s the minimum size for a walk-in closet?
Around 5 by 5 feet is where a walk-in starts to function; 6 by 8 or larger gives access from both sides and more flexibility. We design for whatever you have, including irregular and sloped-ceiling spaces.
Will custom storage add value when I sell?
It’s something buyers notice on a walkthrough — a well-built primary closet or a finished garage stands out in a way wire shelving never does. Agents across Southwest Colorado consistently flag thoughtful storage as a differentiator.
How many color and finish options are there?
More than 50 — crisp whites, warm off-whites, wood tones, deep blues and greens, charcoals, and matte blacks. We bring physical samples to your home so you can see them in the room’s actual light.
Can you build a dressing-room island?
Yes, where the footprint allows — typically about 8 feet of clearance on one side. An island adds drawers, a folding surface, and a focal point. The countertop is coordinated separately.
Where is everything manufactured?
At our own facility at 190 Turner Drive in Durango. Nothing ships in from a national distribution center — which means shorter lead times and changes resolved in days, not weeks.
Do you serve Telluride, Pagosa Springs, and Ouray?
Yes. We travel throughout Southwest Colorado for consultations and installations — Telluride, Pagosa Springs, Ouray, Cortez, Silverton, Bayfield, Farmington, and the surrounding communities.
Can you work with sloped ceilings or other non-standard spaces?
Yes — those are exactly the spaces custom is for. Sloped ceilings, angled walls, shallow niches, and converted rooms are common in mountain homes, and every piece is made to your measurements rather than a standard size.
